FCI Finds a Unique Way to Support MOM
Food Concepts, Inc., (FCI) is a local business that engages not only its entire staff but also its entire network of business contacts in raising awareness and funds for MOM in a unique way. For the past 13 years, the staff of FCI have led an Art Auction with the goal of increasing awareness of hunger and homelessness in our community and raising funds to help MOM combat these issues.
Not only does this event raise significant funds for MOM, but it does so with very little effort from MOM staff. The Art Auction is filled with donations from the community that FCI solicits as well as handmade art, designed by their staff. FCI staff runs the organizing committee, engages their own business contacts to find sponsors, food and beverage donations, designs all of the marketing materials and signage, and turns their entire office building into a gallery for the event. They have even gone so far as to redesign their own space to add picture rails so that the art can easily be hung and displayed.
Each year, every department at FCI creates a themed selection of art for the auction—all done during work hours. To make their art, they use FCI's fabrication materials to create items that will raise the most dollars for MOM. One year, for example, one of the FCI staff teams made a selection of oversized games, including a giant Connect Four game and a simple ski-ball machine. This "contest" amongst their staff provides team building as they work together to support a community cause. The generosity of FCI leadership in integrating this as a work activity enables staff to use their abilities in a way that is best suited to them.
Over the last 12 years, the event has earned just over $150,000.00. These funds directly support MOM's Housing Stability and Food Security programs. Besides raising funds, this event increases MOM’s visibility in the community and allows us to reach others with our message that we would not have been able to reach otherwise.
The dedication and commitment of the entire FCI staff under the direction of CEO, Brad Duesler, exemplifies how businesses can use their unique abilities—and some creativity—to make a difference in our community!
